We appreciate that some terms commonly used in our industry are not familiar to everybody. To try to assist our customers and those looking at new systems we have listed some of the most commonly asked questions below.

What is a Gateway?
A gateway is a small communication unit which allows information gathered from a site or device to be transmitted via GPRS, Ethernet or similar technologies to the Uniq Servers which allows on-line access to your live information. Visit our Gateways page for more information, Click here.
What is a GPRS?
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is the term given to a system developed to transfer data in packets (streams of characters). GPRS uses the 2G and 3G networks which mobile phones use.
What is a GPS?
GPS (Global positioning system) is a satellite based navigation system which provides location and time information in all weather conditions, on or near the earth.
Which Sim Network do you use?
Uniq use a roaming sim which constantly looks for the strongest network. This offers the resilience of being able to switch networks automatically if the in use network drops out for any reason. Where required extension aerials can be used if a signal is not reaching areas such as basements etc. We also have full international coverage if required for our multi national clients.
What is a Remote Monitoring/access?
Remote monitoring is a term given to the ability to monitor, view and / or control a device or its information from a web enabled device in a separate location. A authenticated username and password are required to allow access to the system.
Is Live actually live?
Many systems on the market today offer systems which they call Live. The Uniq Solutions systems can record and display data within 30 seconds of it actually happening. Many control features do react faster than this, depending on the communication connection i.e. phone signal. Although some others do record similar live information, it is common to not be able to view it for at least 24 hours! This doesn’t really allow you to react to potential issues quickly.
What is a Dashboard?
A Dashboard is a page or series of pages on-line which display your live information. Uniq Solutions offer a what we believe is a more customer friendly service with dashboards. Although we can offer pre-defined dashboards we regularly design bespoke dashboards for our clients. We believe the aim of a dashboard is to allow the user to obtain the information they require as simply and clearly as possible. This could be with a site plan or a simple arrangement of active dials which change colour when there is an issue.
To help you design your personal dashboard imagine an image or picture and then superimpose your meter readings, alarms, temperatures or conditions directly on to it.
What are Modbus, M-bus, Bac-Net, Profibus etc?
These are different protocol languages which are used throughout industry to allow devices to communicate. Over many years different companies have created different protocols which limit customers to only use their specific systems. Uniq Solutions use various devices which allow us to read data from most of the major systems and display them live on our own system allowing the end user one common interface.
What can be monitored or controlled?
The simple answer is most things mechanical. If there is a sensor or a signal we can usually find a way to reproduce it as an icon or reading on our system. Open – Closed, Up – Down, On – Off, Speed, Vibration, Temperature, Humidity, Light, Gas, Water and Electric meters are just a few of the common parameters we monitor and control.
