These two systems should not be confused, most gateways are using GPRS with sim cards installed in each device. Wireless equipment uses one of several types of topology or system. Most people are familiar with Bluetooth, Radio, and wireless in our homes, well industry use the same and similar solutions but on more powerful systems.

Wireless systems are created by using a receiver which collects information from one or more transmitters. The transmitter may be sending a pulse signal from a meter, or a temperature from a room or water tank. A simple status transmitter is no more than two wires which say open or closed, on or off, in fault or OK. The receiver is then connected to a gateway which transmits the data collected from both the wireless receiver and any other wired devices connected to it.
